Wawasee High School sophomore, Wynter Rhodes won a contest to design the 2016 Tour des Lakes T-shirt.

Syracuse, IN – The Tour des Lakes bike ride committee decided to hold a contest to design this year’s T-shirt. Teddy Pieper, of Velocity Concepts, LLC, contacted Mr. Eby, the computer graphics teacher at Wawasee High School. His students produced 32 beautiful and creative entries.

“It was difficult to narrow down the entries and in the end, we chose two different designs” recalls Syracuse-Wawasee Trail director Megan McClellan. Amazingly both designs came from

the same student, Wynter Rhodes. Wynter was a sophomore at Wawasee High School. Though her favorite subject is Art, she had never designed anything like this before. She has also never attended the Tour des Lakes, though she does ride her bike around town. “For a while, it was my only mode of transportation”, she elaborated.

Tour-des-Lakes-2016-T-Shirt-MockUp-webA large portion of the proceeds from the Tour des Lakes goes to improving the walking and biking trails in and around Syracuse. This increases safety for all people whose only mode of transpiration is a bike. The Tour des Lakes T-shirts are given free to the first 50 registrants and other riders can purchase them for $20. So far this year there are 150 pre-registered riders. This is more than double the number pre-registered at this time last year.

Tour des Lakes Gives Back to Syracuse-Wawasee Trails

TDL7 Helps Syracuse Wawasee Trails

Did you know part of the proceeds from Tour Des Lakes goes to the Syracuse-Wawasee Trails. The Trails department strives to create more public spaces for our community to be active in. We all have heard about the benefit of trails and our health. Be it walking, running or biking, the exercise and being out of doors have proven to improve our health and outlook.

But another benefit of a trails system might be even closer to your heart as it can improve your property value. Both the National Association of Homebuilders and the National Association of Realtors have found that trails are the second most important community amenity that potential homeowners find important with looking for a new community.   This translates into increased property values as cities and towns invest in a trail system.

The “walkability” of a town to areas of schools, shopping and social destinations helps to raise the livability for its residents. And with that it can help to increase interest in an area and that can increase the property values in a neighborhood or town.

With the completion of the 5 miles of trails around Syracuse Lake, the continuation of trails through town and the plans to start the process of connecting the remainder of Wawasee to the existing trails we can provide un-paralled access to restaurants, schools and shopping as well as making our community and the neighborhoods that are adjacent to the trails of more value to potential homeowners. So in addition to providing opportunities for physical activity our trails can also be an economic benefit to the residents of the area.

There are also benefits to our younger community members. Not long ago, children routinely traveled to and from school by foot or by bicycle. That is no longer the case. The circumstances that have led to a decline in walking and bicycling to school have created a self-perpetuating cycle. As motor vehicle traffic increases, parents become convinced that it is unsafe for their children to walk or bicycle to school. They begin driving them to school, thereby adding even more traffic to the road and sustaining the cycle. The trails department is looking to break this cycle with the availability of more trails. For more information on how trails benefit children visit the trails website.

The Tour Des Lakes is excited to help support this investment in our community. Sign up for Tour Des Lakes today to help contribute!

Calling All Volunteers!

Tour des Lakes Calling All Volunteers

Spring is thankfully right around the corner! So, if you are looking for a way to get out and help the community look no further because Tour Des Lakes and the Syrcause Wawasee Trail’s community is looking for community-minded, energetic volunteers. Webster defines Volunteerism as the use of involvement of volunteer labor, especially in community services. Every community service can use extra help and Tour Des Lakes and Syracuse Wawasee Trails is no exception. As the organization grows and expands, so does the need for help. We are always looking for helpers to work at the setting up the event, helping the ride run smoothly, cleaning up our trails, and serving on the board. It doesn’t take a lot of time, but it does take commitment. We are now excepting volunteers for the ride and the trails.

Go to our Volunteer page to sign up with Tour Des Lakes.

Give Megan McClellan a phone call on her cell at 513-835-5631 or e-mail her at [email protected] to get involved with the trails!
